Home Minister Mardiyanto officiated two new regencies, Tambrauw and Maybrat in West Papua, on Wednesday in a ceremony at the ministry’s office in Jakarta.
The minister also inducted acting Tambrauw regent Menase Paa and acting Maybrat regent Bernard Sagrim, kompas.com reported.
Both regencies were established in October last year after the government and the House of representatives agreed to forming 12 new regencies and cities.
Tambrauw was borne from its parent regency Sorong. It consists of six districts covering an area of more than 5,000 square kilometers with a population of nearly 30,000.
Maybrat, also originating from Sorong, has 11 districts, an area of nearly 5,500 square kilometers and a population of 28,000. (dre)
